On Thursday, the Bureau of Economic Analysis will release its first estimate of second quarter gross domestic product. The consensus call is for an adjusted annual growth rate of 1.9%, against 1.4% in the first three months of 2024.

The price index of personal consumption expenses for June-out on Friday-is expected to show an increase of 2.4% year-on-year, from 2.6% in May. Other data to watch this week will include the S&P Global Consumer and Utilities Index for July and the Census Bureau’s durable goods report for June on Thursday.

Bank of Canada announces its monetary policy decision. The central bank is expected to cut its key short-term interest rate by a quarter of a percentage point to 4.50%.

S&P Global releases its July Manufacturing and Services Purchasing Managers’ Index. Expectations are for a reading of 51.4 for the Manufacturing PMI and 55 for the Services PMI. Both figures will be slightly lower than the June data.

Census Bureau reports new home sales data for June. Economists are forecasting an adjusted annual rate of 630,000 new home sales, up from May. The median sales price for a new home sold in May was $417,000.

Picture of BEA releases the consumer price index in June. Economists are predicting an annual increase of 2.4%. Core PCE, which strips out food and energy prices, is expected to rise 2.5%. Both indexes gained 2.6% in May. The annual increase in core PCE, the Fed’s preferred measure of inflation, is at its lowest level since March 2021.
